Their meet-cute begins a series of events that will alter their lives forever!
Aaron and Nina came to me when I least expected them to. I was playing with a now deleted scene from White Hot Christmas, when Tom Allen brother, Dr. Peter Allen, entered Royal’s Pub & Brewery and ran into an acquaintance, Aaron Masters.
I wanted to write a hero who’d genuinely messed up his life—even if he thought he had no other choice at the time—and was working hard to come out on the other side of the prison walls.
Although I initially had a completely different trajectory planned for Aaron and Nina’s story, I quickly found out that they had their own ideas for how their H.E.A. should be told. I’m always fascinated with the journey characters will take you on, if only you’ll let them!
Nina is someone who wouldn’t see Aaron’s past first. And their meet cute at Starbucks was so much fun to write. The would be coffee thief showed Aaron's protective side, but also that Nina could stand up for herself. I knew the two had chemistry from the beginning.
While writing, I had a chance encounter with a Russell (Aaron's doggo). In early versions of this story, his name was Bear. Then one day on the Metro, I met a real life black English Labrador named Russell, who was a service dog to an Iraq veteran. He had been trained in a prison for eighteen months, and I suddenly knew that I was on the right track! After several kisses, having asked permission to pat him first, I was in love, and Bear became Russell.
Russell loves Aaron unconditionally and doesn't judge him for his past, all he cares about is treats, walks and cuddles. Exactly what Aaron needed!
