Q: You're a nature photographer who became a professor. Why the switch?

A: It wasn't a switch. I spent years in Colorado photographing landscapes — the career was thriving, people pay good money for my prints, but the joy wasn't there anymore. Something told me I needed to come home. Pinetree College offered a chance to teach what I love and reconnect with a place I'd left behind. Turns out helping a student find the right angle to photograph a squirrel is more rewarding than I expected.

Q: When did you know Violet was different?

A: The faculty meeting. She bounced into the conference room — that's the only word for it, bounced — and I felt it immediately. Her intelligence, her enthusiasm. I didn't have a name for it yet. Then I saw her at the bar that night with her friends, heads bent over coloring books, and everything clicked. She looked up and I thought, there you are.

Q: Your kindergarten teacher Mrs. Carr says you were "always wanting to cuddle and care for the class bunny." Were you always a Daddy?

A: Mrs. Carr should not be gossiping about former students. But yes. Even before I knew the word for it, I knew what I was. The need to protect, to care for someone — that's not something you learn. You just recognize it when you finally understand what it means.

Q: What does "little professor" mean to you?

A: It means I see all of Violet. The woman who commands a lecture hall and curates museum-quality exhibits. And the one who dives nose-first into her hot chocolate and needs me to wipe whipped cream off her face. They're the same person. I love them equally.

Q: What's your favorite thing to do with Violet?

A: Read to her. We started with The Hobbit — she insisted, and I do the voices, which apparently I'm "really good at." We're working through Beauty and the Beast now. The original fairy tale, not the Disney version.

Q: Her friends Samantha and Fawn — what was your first interaction with them like?

A: Fawn told me she had neutering equipment in her truck. Samantha watched me with the expression of a prosecutor who already knows the verdict. Message received. Violet is lucky to have them. I told them that, and then I showed them the camera I'd bought Violet, because if they didn't approve, I wasn't giving it to her. They approved.

Q: The stalker situation — without spoilers, how did that change things?

A: I'm a patient man. I wait for the right light, the right shot, the right moment. But when someone left that coloring book in her department mailbox — a cheap one — patience stopped being the right word. I called Marcus before Violet finished her sentence. Some things you don't wait on.
